To the editor:
I'm writing to urge the residents of Pittsfield to vote "Yes" on Question 5 to adopt the Community Preservation Act for the city of Pittsfield on Nov. 8..
The Community Preservation Act (CPA) empowers communities across the state of Massachusetts to create a local Community Preservation Fund for historic preservation, open space protection, affordable housing and outdoor recreation. Monies for this fund would be available through a statewide Community Preservation Trust Fund which provides distributions each year to communities that have adopted the CPA. The Community Preservation Act would benefit Pittsfield in several ways, including:
* Protecting historic buildings from demolition, thereby allowing individuals and groups to explore the possibility of adaptive reuse of these structures.
* Upgrading our parks, playgrounds and recreational spaces, thereby making them safer and cleaner for everyone.
* Locating and evaluating potential buildings for affordable housing.
The Community Preservation Act has provided concrete benefits to many communities in the state, including the creation of jobs, along with preserving and improving a community's character and its quality of life for all of its residents. Please join me in voting "Yes" on Question 5 on Nov. 8.
