DOMINIC F. SLOWEY, Principal of Slowey/McManus Communications, has more than three decades of experience in public relations, government and journalism. His areas of expertise include media relations, crisis communications, strategic planning, public policy and issues management. Dom has managed strategic public relations programs for clients focusing on a variety of issues, such as education, energy and the environment, child abuse and neglect, financial services and investing, human services, healthcare, business tax reform and transportation.
Prior to opening Slowey/McManus, Dom was Senior Managing Director in the Boston office of BSMG Worldwide (later Weber Shandwick), an international communications consulting firm. As a senior executive at Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications, Dom coordinated public relations and government affairs strategies for national and local clients.
Dom has extensive experience in electoral politics, acting as the Deputy Campaign Manager and chief spokesperson on two statewide ballot campaigns. He served as chief fiscal spokesman for Massachusetts Governor William F. Weld, handling all media relations and strategic communications issues for the Governor. He also served as Assistant Secretary for Administration and Finance, and helped develop state fiscal and tax policy, as well as managing communications issues resulting from those decisions. On the city government level, Dom served as a policy analyst and media strategist for Mayor Raymond L. Flynn.
Prior to his career in public relations and government, Dom was a journalist, focusing on political issues at the national, state and city levels. He reported from the State House and City Hall for National Public Radio in Boston (WBUR), the State House News Service, the MetroWest Daily News, and the Boston Ledger with an intensive focus on the 1988 Dukakis presidential campaign, the state’s fiscal crisis, and various presidential, senatorial, gubernatorial and mayoral campaigns.
JAMES G. MCMANUS is a Principal Partner at Slowey/McManus
Jim began his career as a reporter for the National Catholic Reporter, where he was news editor and later Washington bureau chief. He also wrote for the Boston Business Journal as the paper’s first Washington correspondent. Pursuing a professional opportunity in Hong Kong, he trained journalists at a news service and worked as an editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit in Hong Kong, where he covered trade and economic development in Asia in the late 1980s. He then worked as an editor at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and the Boston Herald before moving on to manage the Beacon Hill office of a state senator for five years, coordinating legislative, constituent and media
For more than 30 years, he has worked as a public affairs and public relations consultant, primarily in the health care, utilities, education and human services fields. He was Director of Outreach for the successful 1998 Electricity Restructuring Ballot Campaign. Jim has helped secure media coverage in the most prominent media outlets around the world for clients that include Walmart Stores, Inc., Boston Scientific, Biogen Idec, Eastman Kodak, Enterprise Ireland, the Government of Canada, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and many others. His account teams have won numerous public relations industry awards.
Jim holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross, a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois and a law degree from Suffolk University. He is a member of the Leadership Council of the American Diabetes Association and a board member of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. He has been a guest lecturer at Suffolk University, Boston University and Emerson College.
LISA CAPONE, Managing Director, brings expertise in and passion for public affairs and strategic communications honed over more than 25 years as a journalist and communications professional. She comes to Slowey-McManus from the Massachusetts Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) where she most recently led the Department of Energy Resources’ Green Communities Division, helping cities and towns realize their clean energy potential and co-leading the state’s participation in the US Dept. of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools program.
Lisa also served as both Press Secretary and Assistant Secretary for Communications and Public Affairs at EEA, where she established and implemented communications policy and media relations for the Executive Office and its six agencies. In those role, Lisa managed both daily media outreach activities and communications planning for public policy initiatives.
Lisa’s previous communications and public relations experience includes both government – serving as a public information officer in the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General – and the private sector, where, as principal of upWrite Communications, she served clients such as The Trustees of Reservations, The Nature Conservancy, and Partners Health Care/North Shore Medical Center.
Her journalism career began on Beacon Hill, where she covered diverse state government agencies and issues as a State House News Service reporter and editor. She later edited Conservation Sciences, the quarterly magazine of Plymouth-based Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences, and wrote for The Boston Globe, the Associated Press, Teacher Magazine, Animals Magazine, E-The Environmental Magazine, The Gulf of Maine Times and others – specializing in environmental issues.
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she earned a B.A. in journalism, Lisa has authored two non-fiction books – most recently Inland – the True Story of a North Atlantic Humpback Whale (North Country Press, 2011). She is past Co-President of the Saugus River Watershed Council, and resides with her husband in Melrose, MA.
KATIE KINNE serves as a Senior Account Executive at Slowey/McManus
Communications. She specializes in media relations and strategic communications for clients in the health care, education, non-profit, public affairs and retail sectors. Katie also plans and develops social media strategies and company policies for clients.
Prior to joining Slowey/McManus, Katie was a public relations specialist for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, where she successfully generated top-tier media coverage in local, national and trade publications including the Boston Globe, Boston Business Journal, New York Times and the Boston Herald. Katie helped to develop the company’s short- and long-term communications plans and messaging to enhance brand identity,
protect institutional reputation and influence public discourse.
Katie also worked at The Castle Group, Inc., coordinating campaigns for agency activities related to organizations such as Goodwill Industries, the March of Dimes, and the Smaller Business Association of New England.
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston, Katie holds a bachelor’s degree in English.
KATE M. JACKSON has worked as a freelance journalist and communications professional for more than a decade.
She has worked with a diverse base of corporate and non-profit clients that run the gamut from Fidelity Investments to the Cardinal Cushing Center. As a regular correspondent for The Boston Globe and The Patriot Ledger, she has covered a wide array topics including style, real estate, business, and the workplace. She’s also served as a reporter for Bay State Parent magazine where her features and essays won several awards from Parenting Publication of America. Her in-depth piece on 9/11 families in Massachusetts earned first place in feature writing from the New England Press Association.
Prior to her freelance career, Kate worked in high-tech public relations where she managed various start-up companies and associations during the dot.com boom of the 1990s. She also served as a communications specialist and writer on the Big Dig’s public information team for six years.

Journalism from Northeastern University
MAIJA MCMANUS, Account Executive
Maija has been consulting for SMC as well as working freelance for nearly ten years, helping develop social media and marketing strategies for clients in the corporate and non-profit sectors.
A graduate of the University of Toronto, Maija holds a degree in Social Equity and Disability Studies. She has previously worked as a behavior analyst at the New England Center for Children.
CLAIRE BELANGER, Account Executive
Claire specializes in social media management and strategic communications for clients in the healthcare, non-profit, education, and public affairs sectors. She has successfully curated social media campaigns with visuals to attract maximum attention to client accounts and posts. Additionally, Claire has put together strategic press lists and media advisories for clients in various sectors and achieved great feedback and results.
Claire will graduate from Emmanuel College this spring with a degree in English Communications/Media Studies.
